If you think Jake Gyllenhaal is just a good-looking, incredibly fit, talented Hollywood actor who once won the MTV Movie Award for Best Kiss, think again. He also has one impressive singing voice. The 36-year-old star is about to make his Broadway musical debut in a revival of Stephen Sondheim’s classic Sunday in the Park With George, and not a moment too soon. On Monday night, Gyllenhaal posted a short rehearsal video to Facebook that showcases his vocal chops. The four-minute, behind-the-scenes video was shot by True Detective‘s former director, Cary Fukunaga.

“This is what happens when Riva Marker (the badass president of NineStories) and I invite #CaryJojiFukunaga to rehearsals for our new Broadway musical,” Gyllenhaal wrote. “Check out this video we made! #SundayintheParkWithGeorge.”

In the clip, the actor wanders aimlessly down a seemingly endless staircase as he sings “Finishing the Hat,” a signature song from the show. The staircase does eventually end, however, and Gyllenhaal finds himself onstage, surrounded by the orchestra. When the music comes to a halt, he looks at the conductor and laughs. “Welcome to the Hudson Theatre,” Gyllenhaal says.

We’ll give you a minute to take that in. Because the guy singing in that video once looked like this:

In addition to stunning everyone with his singing skills, Gyllenhaal will be onscreen soon in the upcoming sci-fi flick Life, which co-stars Ryan Reynolds and Rebecca Ferguson. It hits theaters in late March, so even if you can’t make it to Broadway, you can still get in some quality time with the star.

The Tony Award-winning musical begins performances this Saturday and officially opens on Feb. 23, but the show isn’t the only thing that’s new. The theater itself was one of the first ever on Broadway before having stints as a TV studio (in the ’50s), a porn theater (in the ’60s), a rock venue (in the ’80s), and, for the last 20 years, a hotel event space. After undergoing a massive renovation, the Hudson Theatre is back — with one of Hollywood’s hottest heartthrobs on its stage. Not a bad way to get back in the game.
