James Cameron isn’t a man to do things by half.

So with that, he’s revealed that he’s now finished writing all four of his planned sequels for his 2009 sci-fi epic ‘Avatar’.

In addition to that, he’s expecting to begin production for ‘Avatar 2’ within the year.

Asked by the Daily Beast what the status of ‘Avatar 2’ is at the moment, he said: “The thing is, my focus isn’t on Avatar 2.

“My focus is on Avatar 2, 3, 4, and 5 equally. That’s exactly how I’m approaching it. They’ve all been developed equally. I’ve just finished the script to Avatar 5.

“I’m now starting the process of active prep. I’ll be working with the actors in the capture volume in August, so I’m booked in production every day between now and then. Our volume is up and running, and everything is designed, and so we’re going full-guns right now.

“I feel like I’ve been let out of jail, because I’ve been in the writing cave for the last two years. I’m actually enjoying life. I don’t enjoy writing. I wouldn’t wish writing on a dog.”

With the fact that it’s coming up for eight years since the first movie was released, there has to be a level of speculation over whether there’s any appetite among movie-goers for a sequel anymore.

However, whatever you thought of the first movie – it’s worth remembering that the reviews were very good on the whole – it remains one of the biggest box office hits of all time, not to mention one of the most technically advanced for its time (and he’s aiming for ‘glasses-free 3D’ in the new movies too).

It made a staggering $3 billion (£2.4 billion) around the world, which, adjusting for inflation, makes it the second highest grossing film ever, behind ‘Gone With The Wind’, and just ahead of the first ‘Star Wars’ movie.

The first movie in the new series was due to hit screens at Christmas, 2018, but whether that will be revised again is not yet known.

The next movies also also slated for December 2020, 2022, and 2023.
