With Terminator: Dark Fate in cinemas now, James Cameron has been speaking about this reboot being part of a potential trilogy.

Cameron, who made the first two Terminator movies, and has produced this reboot – which has disregarded the three movies that emerged in the interim – added that future movies will expand upon the subject matter in Dark Fate.

He told Collider: “We sort of know where our storyline is going in broad strokes because we actually had other – I don’t know if you noticed, but the story credits for the movie are a little weird because you’ve also got Chic Eglee and Josh Friedman in the story credits because we sat in the room and we broke story across three movies before we focused down onto the first of the proposed three, which is Dark Fate.

“So there’s really a plot line that runs all the way out through a third film, if we get to that stage. And the reason for that is you spend a couple of weeks to future-proof yourself so you don’t paint yourself into a corner and you could still do the things that you want to do.

“So yeah, there’s a lot of good thinking that exists already on that.”

He went on: “What we wanted to get in the first movie was this idea that it’s just going to keep happening. The names will change, but the basic conflict is going to continue to take place until it gets resolved one way or the other.”

Judging by some of the first reviews, however, this is part of the criticism of this latest instalment.

The movie has received middling notices so far, some critics picking up on the film's plot taking much from Terminator 2: Judgement Day.

Time Out wrote: “The set-up and structure is so similar to 1991's landmark Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Dark Fate could almost be called a remake. It's a watery facsimile of that movie, so full of nods and winks that you worry that it may be having a stroke.”

Future Terminator movies could depend on how much fans are likely to value Cameron's return to the fold, along with Linda Hamilton reprising her role as Sarah Connor.

Terminator Genisys, which made $440 million, will only have barely broken even in 2015.

Dark Fate is out now across the UK.
