James Cameron Wants Avatar Sequels To Prove First Film Wasn’t a “Big Fluke”

One thing director James Cameron can never, ever be accused of is a lack of ambition. After following up the former biggest box office hit ever, 1997′s ‘Titanic,’ with the current biggest box office hit ever, 2009′s ‘Avatar,’ he’s gearing up to go even bigger.

Cameron is currently hard at work preparing to shoot three - yes, three - ‘Avatar’ sequels back-to-back. But even after delivering the two biggest money-earners in Hollywood history, the filmmaker still feels he has plenty to prove.

Telling Entertainment Weekly that he’s “in the process of doing another pass through all three scripts right now - just refining,” Cameron admits there’s no shortage of pressure.

He says the process hasn’t gotten any easier for him, “Because you have to challenge yourself. Obviously, expectations are going to be very high on these films, especially on Avatar 2, to make sure it wasn’t just some big fluke the first time.

“So we’ve got to deliver. I’ve created a nice rod for my own back, so they say.”

Cameron has been working with screenwriters Josh Friedman on ‘Avatar 2′, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver on ‘Avatar 3′, and Shane Salerno on ‘Avatar 4.’ The films are expected to further explore the alien world of Pandora, with the first sequel expected to be set largely in the ocean.

Much of the original cast is expected to return including Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang and Sigourney Weaver - even though the latter two were killed in the first film. (Ewya working in mysterious ways, we guess.)

Photography is expected to begin next year, with the first ‘Avatar’ sequel expected to hit cinemas in December 2017.
