James Corden was originally supposed to play the lead character in The Whale.

The critically acclaimed film, which was directed by Darren Aronofsky, ended up starring Brendan Fraser but Corden revealed he was attached to an earlier iteration of the project.

Talking to Deadline, Corden revealed: "I was going to play that part, and Tom Ford was going to direct."

Corden added that the project later fell apart because fashion designer and sometimes film director Ford demanded too much creative control over the movie.

The actor and talk show host also revealed that George Clooney was at one point mooted to direct but only if they could find a 600lbs actor to play the lead.

Last week, Corden told how he auditioned to play Samwise Gamgee in Lord of the Rings when he was a young actor.

Corden admitted his audition for the fantasy film series was "not good". He added: "Every single person in London auditioned for Lord of The Rings, everybody, and I auditioned for Samwise."

Describing the audition process, Corden said: "Two of my other friends went in. And then we all got called back the next day, and then we got called back the next day, and then none of us got called back after that."

The role of Samwise eventually went to former child star Sean Astin.

Corden would go on to get his break shortly after when he was cast in ITV drama Fat Friends alongside future Gavin & Stacey collaborator Ruth Jones. He gained greater popularity when he starred in both the theatre and film versions of Alan Bennett's The History Boys.

The Late Late Show host is set to move back to the UK later this year when he leaves his presenting job, a role he has held since 2015.
