Superman: Legacy director James Gunn has responded to an inaccurate rumour surrounding his DC reboot.

Last year, Henry Cavill was confirmed not to be returning as the Man of Steel, with Gunn suggesting that the next Superman movie will focus "on an earlier part of Superman's life". David Corenswet was later announced to be taking over the role.

However, a Superman reference in Blue Beetle resulted in some speculation about where Superman: Legacy will fit in the DCU chronology.

"So in Blue Beetle at least in the commercial, Jaime knows who Superman is, and you've said Blue Beetle is in your DCU. So is your young Superman movie set in the past?" a fan asked Gunn on Threads.

In response, the Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker posted: "I was never making a 'young Superman' movie, just a Superman movie!"

At a press conference in January this year, both Gunn and his DC Studios colleague Peter Safran revealed how Legacy would not stand as an origin story.

"It focuses on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. Superman represents truth, justice, and the American way. He is kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old-fashioned," Safran said at the time.

Gunn added: "He's working. He's a reporter. He's at the Daily Planet.

"Again, we're coming into a world where superheroes exist and have existed. So, does that mean Batman might be a couple years older than Superman? Yes, it could be."

Rachel Brosnahan has also been confirmed to be playing Lois Lane in Superman: Legacy, which has been scheduled for a 2025 release.

Blue Beetle is now in cinemas, while Superman: Legacy premieres July 11, 2025.
