James Marsden for Anchorman 2

X-Men star will play Burgundy's rival.

James Marsden is to join the cast of 'Anchorman 2', according to reports.

The 'X-Men' (he played Cyclops in the first three films) star is to play Ron Burgundy's nemesis, says Deadline, though few other details have been revealed.

Marsden does have comedy chops, however, having appeared in cameo roles in the likes of '30 Rock' and 'Modern Family'.

What this potentially means for the return of Vince Vaughn as Ron Burgundy's previous news nemesis Wes Mantooth is unclear, but Vaughn is rumoured to be making a return.

Marsden joins Kristen Wiig who was also recently confirmed for the sequel.

The 'Bridesmaids' star is to reportedly set to play the love interest for weatherman Brick Tamland, played by Steve Carrell.

Elsewhere, the cast from the first film seem to be returning en masse.

Christina Applegate, Paul Rudd, David Koechner and, of course, Will Ferrell will be returning as the core of the Channel 4 news team.

Adam McKay is back to direct too.

'Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues' is out on December 20.
