James Wan Says He’ll “Have Fun” With Aquaman Character

After dropping by at WonderCon this weekend, director James Wan had some interesting details to reveal about his upcoming ‘Aquaman’ movie, starring Jason Momoa.

With ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ finally in cinemas, focus has shifted to the upcoming ‘Justice League’ and solo movies, especially Wan’s ‘Aquaman’, and he’s been eager to reveal his fresh approach to the often mocked character.

Speaking to IGN, the ‘Fast & Furious 7′ helmer insisted there’d be a serious and lighthearted side to the movie. “The kind of filmmaker that I am, even my darker horror films generally are still very fun,” he said. “And I think that’s important for me and the kind of films I make.”

Not only is it vital to retain his style, but in representing a respectable and modern depiction of the ocean-dwelling hero. “I think ‘Aquaman’ is a character that a lot of people have made fun of over the years, and I just think it’s fun to actually show a really different, cool, badass side to this character,” he shared.

Perhaps the vital aspect of the upcoming film will indeed be about making Aquaman into a respected character, rather than a hero we all ridicule. Making him cool again will surely be make or break, and Momoa’s initial look is indeed brooding and badass, “But at the same time, let’s not forget to have fun with it,” Wan reminds us.

So are we likely to see something as well balanced as, say, ‘Avengers Assemble’? Surely that’s the aim if DC are to stand any chance of genuinely competing with Marvel. Some have already criticised ‘Dawn of Justice’ for taking itself a bit too seriously - there’s barely a joke to be seen - but it’s performing well at the box office, having amassed almost $200 million in its opening weekend.

‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ is in UK cinemas now, with ‘Aquaman’ reaching our screens summer, 2018.
