‘Fifty Shades Darker’ is so extravagantly sexual that some of the sex toys featured in the film actually had to be invented.

It has now been revealed that these came with a few extra kinks that actually hampered production. Jamie Dornan recently admitted to PEOPLE that some of the sex toys, which came from the imagination of author E.L. James, that had to be designed didn’t “perform” in the manner intended.

“The spreader bar, they made that,” Dornan explained in reference to a particular device from the books. “They were actually really struggling to get their hands on that.”

But while the ‘Fifty Shades Darker’ prop team were able to make the toy, they couldn’t make it consistently work. “It didn’t work a couple of time and held us back a bit,” Jamie Dornan recalled. “It didn’t quite achieve what we wanted it to achieve, but when it mattered it worked, so it was all good.”

During the same interview Jamie Dornan admitted that his co-star Dakota Johnson was just as problematic as the above toys, as she would repeatedly ruin takes by laughing so hard that she snorted. Dornan added, “She laughs, then she’s crying, makeup has to come in and redo the mascara or whatever it is.”

Both Dornan and Johnson have previously insisted that laughing helped to quash any potential awkwardness during production, and he admitted, “We had a lot of fun on this job and made each other laugh a lot … especially the more tense the scene is, the more I think we should be laughing.”

We’ll get to see if this enjoyment translates to the big-screen when ‘Fifty Shades Darker’ opens in the UK on Friday.
