A first look at Tron: Ares has been unveiled by star Jared Leto.

The next movie in the Tron franchise is currently in the works, and will follow a sentient programme that "crosses over into the human world that is not ready for contact".

A new still from the film has now been released, showing what appears to be a villainous character in a red suit.

"ARE YOU READY?? TRON: ARES 2025 See you on the grid…," Leto shared in a caption on X (formerly Twitter) accompanied by the photo.

Alongside the actor, Ares is set to star Evan Peters, Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith, Sarah Desjardins, Cameron Monaghan and Gillian Anderson.

Most of the characters remain under wraps for now, though we do know that Past Lives' Lee will play a video game programmer and tech CEO.

The full synopsis reads: "Tron: Ares follows a highly sophisticated Program, Ares, who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with AI beings."

The movie will be directed by Joachim Rønning and written by The Crow's Jesse Wigutow and Enola Holmes' Jack Thorne.

Ares follows the first two Tron movies, which were released in 1982 and 2010, respectively. It is now being reported that the new movie is slated for a 2025 release by Disney.

Speaking about the movie, Rønning said in a statement: “I’m excited to be part of the Tron franchise and bring this new film to fans around the world. Tron: Ares builds upon the legacy of cutting-edge design, technology and storytelling. Now more than ever, it feels like the right time to return to the Grid.”

Tron: Ares is expected in cinemas in 2025.
