Jason Biggs: I do get pigeon-holed

12 November 2012

Jason Biggs has revealed that he had to fight to star in political drama Grassroots, because it was not a comic role.

The American Pie star, best known for playing hapless Jim in the teen comedies, shows his serious side in Stephen Gyllenhaal's political drama, in which he plays campaign manager Phil Campbell.

"I tend to be looked at in a certain way, which is all well and good, but when I want to do parts like Phil Campbell, it's more difficult. I have to work a little harder to get roles like this, and that always intrigues me and makes me want the role more," he said.

Bar a Broadway production of The Graduate in 2002, in which he starred in the role made famous by Dustin Hoffman, Jason's CV is filled with teen comedies and romcoms.

The 34-year-old still has a soft spot for his American Pie alter-ego, however: "For me as an actor, Jim's got everything I love. He's got heart, he's got some really sweet moments, some great jokes and some great physical comedy to do."

Although he considers heading into dramatic territory after the success of the American Pie film series, he has "zero regrets about anything".

"If I had the opportunity, perhaps. This industry is very fickle and at the time of American Pie's release and success, and my status as a commodity in Hollywood, I had been acting for 15-20 years and had seen all the ups and downs, and the unpredictably of the industry," he explained.

"You do a movie that has that success, and you are given a chance to star in movies that are similar, I don't know that you'd do anything different."
