Jason Momoa to star in Just Cause video game adaptation

It’s official – ‘Just Cause’ is coming to the big screen.

According to Deadline, the popular video game is getting its own movie… with ‘Aquaman’ star Jason Momoa landing the leading role.

“A feature film based on the popular Square Enix video game Just Cause is getting closer to reality and the plans are to make a big-screen franchise from it,” they revealed. “Jason Momoa, who stars as Aquaman in the hotly anticipated Justice League and has his own spin-off film for the character, has signed on to star and Brad Peyton has stepped in to helm the feature film from a screenplay by John Collee.”

But what exactly is ‘Just Cause’?

The original game was released in 2006 and focussed on Agency operative Rico Rodriguez and his attempt to overthrow the dictator of a tropical island – Salvador Mendoza – who the Agency believes to possess weapons of mass destruction.

And it sounds as though the film will be roughly the same.

“The story, like the game, follows Rico Rodriguez (Momoa) who is an operative for an organization known as the Agency. The plot of the movie is under wraps but it is expected to deal in some way with Rico’s crisis of conscience while on a mission.”

Of course, Jason Momoa is due to appear in the upcoming ‘Justice League’ movie before starring in his own ‘Aquaman’ solo film.

And now it looks as though he’ll be going undercover, too.

“Producing will be Peyton and Jeff Fierson through their ASAP Entertainment banner and Roy Lee through his Vertigo Entertainment, Adrian Askarieh through his banner Prime Universe Films; Eva Cao through her Supernova Entertainment; and Mason XU and Fan Dong through DNA Co. Ltd. China-based DNA also provided the financing for the film.”

Will it be any good?

For now, we have to wait and see. But video game movies don’t have the best track record.
