Ben Affleck and Kevin Smith reboot their friendship in the first 'Jay and Silent Bob Reboot' trailer

Nothing mends bridges between friends like a good old-fashioned reboot. Back in the ’90s, Kevin Smith and Ben Affleck had their own Scorsese-De Niro relationship going, collaborating on six movies over a decade-long period. But it’s been a hot minute since the director and his one-time leading man have been on the same set. That is ... until now. The just-released trailer for Smith’s new film, Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, revealed that Affleck will be reprising his Chasing Amy role as cartoonist Holden McNeil in Smith’s star-studded comedy, due in theaters on Oct. 15. In the past, Smith has blamed himself for causing the rumored rift between himself and Affleck. The first sign that things were copacetic between the duo again occurred in the run-up to San Diego Comic-Con, where Smith will premiere an exclusive scene from Jay and Silent Bob Reboot at his annual Hall H panel. After Smith posted a promotional image for the movie on his Twitter feed, a familiar name slid into his replies.

That in turn led the notoriously sentimental Smith to get all emotional.

And with the trailer making their renewed friendship official, Twitter is ready to welcome the dynamic duo back.

Affleck may be the person Smith fans are most excited to see, but the director assembled an Avengers-style collection of all-stars for Jay and Silent Bob Reboot ... including one actual Avenger, Chris Hemsworth. Returning to the View Askewniverse Smith created with his breakthrough film, Clerks, Reboot finds heterosexual life partners Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Smith) retracing their steps from 2001’s Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. In that film, they made the cross-country trip to Los Angeles to stop their Bluntman and Chronic alter egos from becoming big time big-screen superheroes. In this one , they travel back to L.A. to stop the reboot of that movie on the grounds that it “sucked balls.”

Along the way, the two encounter actual movie stars like Val Kilmer as himself, and reconnect with such Smith staples as Brodie (Jason Lee), Dante (Brian O’Halloran) and, of course, Matt Damon. Jay also checks in with his old flame Justice (Shannon Elizabeth), who introduces him — and us — to the next generation of Askewniverse heroes like his daughter, Millennium Falcon, played by Smith’s real-life daughter, Harley Quinn Smith. We can’t wait for her to teach Affleck’s kids how to say “Snoochie boochies.”

Jay and Silent Bob Reboot opens in theaters for a special sneak preview on Oct. 15. Visit Fathom Events for ticket information.
