Jennifer Lawrence Kicks Ass In First Trailer For Joy

Jennifer Lawrence’s new movie ‘Joy’ – which reunites her with Bradley Cooper and their American Hustle director David O. Russell – is about the woman who invented the Miracle Mop, not that you’d know it from the first teaser trailer. Watch it below…

Instead we’re treated to a life-in-a-minute version of Joy, accompanied by a version of The Rolling Stones’ ‘You Can’t Always Get What You Want’, as she goes from little girl being promised the world to a gun-toting hardcase.

While it’s difficult to tell exactly how writer/director Russell will handle the biopic, judging from the teaser it employs the same kind of epic period sweep as ‘Hustle’, though the haircuts aren’t quite as bad.

Unsurprisingly, Lawrence is in pretty much every frame, proving just how compelling an actress she is even in a trailer.

Also starring Robert De Niro, who we briefly see making what looks like a wedding toast, we get a slight sense of the home shopping empire which Joy created, courtesy of Cooper’s control over a room of phone salespeople.

The real-life Mangano created her iconic mop (other inventions followed) while raising her three children as a single mother in the Eighties.

After first appearing on home shopping channel QVC to flog her cleaning device in 1992, she sold 18,000 mops in 20 minutes. A decade on, her company Ingenious Designs was turning over tens of millions of dollars.

JLaw and Cooper will be hoping for a more fruitful reunion this time after flopping in ‘Serena’, while Russell is smarting after the botched release of his unfinished movie ‘Nailed’ which was recut without his input and recently released to bad reviews as ‘Accidental Love’.

With such a cast and a rags-to-riches story, it’s no surprise that ‘Joy’ is being touted as an awards contender.

It’s released in the UK on 1 January next year.
