Jeremy Renner: Getting Equal Pay For Women Is Not My Job

Jeremy Renner isn’t interested in getting equal pay for women in Hollywood, it would seem.

Following Jennifer Lawrence’s excellent essay about closing the age gap between male and female actors, her ‘American Hustle’ co-star sounded like he was absolving himself from any responsibility.

Asked about the issue during an interview with Business Insider, Renner said: “That’s not my job. I don’t know contracts and money and all that sort of stuff.

“I’m a performer, and I know human behavior. When it comes to that sort of stuff, I let other people deal with that.

“I do what I’m good at - that’s what I focus on.”

Since the hacking of emails at Sony, it emerged that the male stars of 'American Hustle’ were paid much more than their female counterparts, despite it being an ensemble cast.

His opinion sits at odds with that of Bradley Cooper – also Lawrence and Renner’s co-star in 'American Hustle’ – who seemed much more concerned with the issue.

He praised Lawrence for speaking about it, and also his 'Burnt’ co-star Sienna Miller, who revealed she’d turned down a role after finding out she was being paid less than her male counterpart.

“If you think that you only deserve a certain amount and that’s not correct, it’s about changing that mindset and sticking up for yourself the way that Sienna did.

“So that’s a great thing. There’s a double standard in the whole world, yeah, for sure. This is just one aspect. Anytime there’s a place where a voice can come out and be outspoken – something Sienna did, or Jennifer – that’s great … I think it is making a difference.”

Lawrence penned an emotive essay for Lena Dunham’s feminist-leaning newsletter Lenny.

“When the Sony hack happened and I found out how much less I was being paid than the lucky people with d**ks, I didn’t get mad at Sony. I got mad at myself. I failed as a negotiator because I gave up early,” she wrote.

“I would be lying if I didn’t say there was an element of wanting to be liked that influenced my decision to close the deal without a real fight. I didn’t want to seem ‘difficult’ or 'spoiled’.

“I’m over trying to find the 'adorable’ way to state my opinion and still be likeable! F**k that.”
