Jerry Lewis conducts the most awkward interview of all time

You can’t help wondering why, if Jerry Lewis likes doing interviews this little, he agreed to do this one.

As part of a large and beautifully put together feature by The Hollywood Reporter on the powerhouses of the entertainment business who are still working into their 80s and 90s (and in Norman Lloyd’s case, into his 100s), the revered industry mag secured some time with the legendarily cantankerous actor, writer, director and comedian.

But while the other interviews – with the likes of Carl Reiner, Dick Van Dyke, Don Rickles, Stan Lee and Betty White – went swimmingly, Lewis’s one-to-one is a brilliant, watch-through-your-fingers car crash.

Uttering one word answers throughout, (“Have you ever thought about retiring?”, to which he spits back “Why?”), Lewis shows a withering disdain for his interviewer, the truly unfortunate Andy Lewis (clearly no relation).

And his forced chuckle at the end is worth the entry price alone.

Mr Jerry Lewis, we salute you.
