X-Men star Jessica Chastain has teamed up with Dark Phoenix writer and director Simon Kinberg for new, female-led spy thriller The 355 – and its first trailer is finally here.

The 355, also starring Lupita Nyong'o, Diane Kruger, and Penélope Cruz, sees a "dream team" of formidable female spies from across the world come together to put a stop to the threat of World War III. Just your typical, low stakes affair, then.

The official synopsis reveals that CIA agent Mason 'Mace' Brown (Chastain), German agent Marie (Kruger), MI6 ally and computer specialist Khadijah (Nyong'o), and Colombian psychologist Graciela (Cruz) are thrown together when a top-secret weapon falls into "mercenary hands".

The 355, as they call themselves, will find themselves fighting to keep the world safe, while also trying to stay one step ahead of "mysterious woman" Lin Mi Sheng, played by Bingbing Fan, who's tracking their every move.

Avengers: Endgame's Sebastian Stan and The Girl on the Train's Edgar Ramírez will both also star in the film.

Jessica Chastain first drafted the project back in 2018, saying that her ambition was always to do "another female ensemble film".

"I love the Bourne movies, the Mission: Impossible films, and wondered why, except for Charlie's Angels, there hadn't been a true female ensemble action-thriller spy film," she explained at the time.

"That got my wheels going, along with the idea of casting actresses from all over the world to truly make it an international project."

Opening up about her hopes that The 355 will increase opportunities for women in film, Jessica added: "It's so exciting to be part of a film that will allow for not just one female action hero but a whole ensemble of very capable, fierce female characters that reject tired stereotypes."

The 355 is expected to open in cinemas on January 15, 2021.
