Jessica Chastain picks up film gong

Jessica Chastain showed black is best as she picked up a gong at the National Board of Review Awards Gala in New York.

The 35-year-old actress wore a black Alexander McQueen gown with embellished gold neckline as she took home the award for best actress for her performance in Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty at Cipriani 42nd Street.

Les Miserables star Anne Hathaway also wore black, but plumped for a suit to go with her pixie haircut.

Amanda Seyfried and Emily Blunt - who attended the event with husband John Krasinski, who won the NBR Freedom Of Expression award - both wowed in nude tones.

Emily picked a figure-hugging dress from Emilio Pucci, while Amanda chose a breath-taking studded and snake-skin printed halter-neck dress by Bottega Veneta.

Bradley Cooper won best actor for his role in Silver Linings Playbook, while Argo actor-director Ben Affleck won the Special Achievement Filmmaker gong.

Anne, Eddie Redmayne and Amanda represented the cast of Les Miserables, who received the best ensemble award from Oscar-winning director Tom Hooper, and the young actress of Beasts Of The Southern Wild Quvenzhane Wallis was honoured with the breakthrough performance award.

Daniel Craig and Vanessa Redgrave also attended the ceremony in New York.
