J.J. Abrams Wants To See Gay Characters In Future Star Wars Films

‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ may have made way for strong female roles, but its director J.J. Abrams is looking forward to seeing gay characters in the future.

Speaking to People, the filmmaker said about the diversity of the ‘Star Wars’ galaxy: “When I talk about inclusivity, it’s not excluding gay characters, it’s about inclusivity, so of course.”

In fact, the ‘Super 8′ helmer reckons it’d be a huge oversight if more diverse characters - including gay ones - weren’t included in the ‘Star Wars’ universe at some point.

“To me the fun of Star Wars is exploring the possibilities, so it seems insanely narrow-minded to say that there wouldn’t be a homosexual character in that world.”

Yet these bold statements weren’t exactly backed up in his film, released late last year, which didn’t depict anything other than heterosexual characters - unless you’re counting Finn and Poe’s bromance that the internet has taken a shine to.

That said, there was enough (totally unfounded) controversy casting John Boyega, a black male, in the lead role (and as a stormtrooper), so we can only imagine the small-mindedness that would’ve presented itself had there been gays characters in ‘The Force Awakens’.

Still, we can only hope that Abrams’ open-mindedness is taken on board for future instalments, and we begin to see the universe branch out from its male-focused heroes.
