A Quiet Place star, writer and director John Krasinski originally said that he wouldn't do a second film, but now that A Quiet Place part II is being released, he's more open to the idea of a third – to the point of placing seeds in the sequel to potentially be picked up later.
Talking about the horror series' use of intertitles — when the audience is told what day of the post-apocalypse it is — Krasinski told The Hollywood Reporter about how they've opened the door for him to continue exploring the world he has created in further films.
"I didn’t realize that they were easily flashbackable, if that’s a term," he explained.
"When I decided how I would write the sequel, the first thing I thought of was day one. And I was confident enough doing day one because I knew the device would work," he explained, noting it "allowed [him] to do the flashback very easily".
"I knew that it was the connective tissue that I wanted to bridge the two movies because then you pick up right where we left off," he continued. "I didn’t think of it in the first movie. There were a lot of things I didn’t realize would be great for the sequel.
"I also remember thinking to myself when we were shooting, 'Oh man, I wonder what’s going on at the other side of those fires. I wonder who’s living on the other side of those fires, and how are they living?'"
The Office US star added that he "thought it was a cool hypothetical question. And then all of a sudden, I realized, 'The other side is the way in on Part II, and that’s where they would go if their barn burned down.'"
Krasinski added that "a lot of the things I had thought were interesting to think about on Part I ended up being" in the sequel, adding, "any time I had ideas like that, I wrote them down in case there ever is a Part III or a third one. So I would be able to reference some of these things if there is a Part III.
"And we even went so far as to put in a couple Easter eggs, so that if I did do a third one, they would connect back to the second one." Interesting...
While Krasinski is unsure about whether a third movie will happen, his co-star and real life wife Emily Blunt went into the second with the expectation that it was the middle act of a trilogy.
A Quiet Place Part II is released in UK cinemas on June 3.
