Note: Contains spoilers for John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum.

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum picks up with John Wick (Keanu Reeves) in a bit of a situation with a $14 million global contract on his head.

The threequel sees the titular assassin try to fix his predicament and stay alive at the same time, which would be tricky for most people, but maybe not someone like John Wick, AKA The Boogeyman, AKA the Baba Yaga.

Director Chad Stahelski has already spoken about there being plans for future movies after John Wick 3, not to mention the TV show based around the Continental. "I enjoy making these movies because there's no limit," he told EW.

"We create our own mythology, and we have a studio that both stays out of our way and supports us on the wacky decisions. If people go see the movie, and it makes money, and they came back to us, Keanu and I have ideas for days."

And shortly after the huge box office opening for the third movie, Lionsgate confirmed that there will be a John Wick 4, so how does Chapter 3 set it up?

John Wick 3 ending: How does it set up a fourth movie?

During Wick's exile, he is given the choice by the Elder (Saïd Taghmaoui) to either kill the Continental owner Winston (Ian McShane) or die.

Wick chooses to return to the Continental, but never plans to kill Winston. Obviously the High Table (a council of crime lords that control everything) aren't too pleased with this and the Adjudicator (Asia Kate Dillon) declares the Continental 'deconsecrated', meaning business can take place on the hotel's grounds.

So a bunch of High Table assassins, including Zero (Mark Dacascos), try to take down Wick, Winston and Continental concierge Charon (Lance Reddick), and it won't be a surprise to say they don't succeed.

The Adjudicator calls a truce and promises to restore the Continental to its former position, but only if Winston kills Wick. Unlike Wick, Winston shows no mercy and shoots Wick several times, causing him to fall off the roof of the hotel.

In a ridiculous twist that only works in the world of John Wick, he survives and is taken to the Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne). Somehow he's still alive too despite the High Table punishing him for helping Wick in the second movie by having Zero cut him seven times (the Bowery King gave Wick seven bullets).

The movie ends with the Bowery King promising revenge on the High Table and recruiting Wick to his cause. It seems that the third movie's subtitle Parabellum ("prepare for war") was referring to this war that will take place in the fourth movie.

John Wick 4 plot: What do we know so far?

Very little, but it will be very sad.

Speaking to IndieWire, Stahelski said: "John may survive all this shit, but at the end of it, there’s no happy ending. He’s got nowhere to go. Honestly, I challenge you right now, here’s a question to you: How do you f**king want me to end it?

"Do you think he’s going to ride off into the f**king sunset? He’s killed 300 f**king people and he’s just going to [walk away], everything’s okay? He’s just going to fall in love with a love interest?

"If you’re this f**king guy, if this guy really exist[ed], how is this guy’s day going to end? He’s f**ked for the rest of his life. It’s just a matter of time."

Well, there you have it.

John Wick 4 release date: When could we expect it?

The fourth John Wick movie will be released on May 21, 2021 in the US, so hopefully the UK will get it around the same time as it did with the third movie.

Filming on the third movie took place between May-November 2018 ahead of its May 2019 release, so we can probably expect production to start on the fourth movie in early summer 2020.

There is also a John Wick TV series in the works: The Continental. The show, a prequel, will air on the US network Starz. However, fans who just can't wait to get more John Wick are in for a disappointment.

Speaking to the Television Critics Association, Starz CEO Jeffrey Hirsch said: "My sense is based on where we are today, the movie’s date has already been set. We’re still in early development on the series so most likely after." (via Deadline.)

Not to mention, being a prequel means John Wick may not be in it at all. When asked about Keanu Reeves' involvement, Hirsh said: "That’s a really good question that I’m not going to answer. No answer is as good a tease as you’re going to get.”

But this contradicts The Continental's pilot director Chad Stahelski, who told Rotten Tomatoes: "The way they’re developing and they’re trying to do it very, very quickly. Depending on that production schedule, yes, I’d very much like to do it."

John Wick 4 cast: Will Keanu Reeves return?

Keanu Reeves will of course be back as John Wick as a John Wick movie without him would be like a Mission: Impossible movie without Tom Cruise.

Elsewhere, Laurence Fishburne is likely to be back as the Bowery King given the ending of the third movie, and he'll be joined by Jason Mantzoukas as the Tick Tock Man, one of the Bowery King's assassins.

Franchise regulars Ian McShane and Lance Reddick will be back as Winston and Charon, although it's unclear if they'll be on Wick's side or if he won't be able to forgive Winston for trying to kill him.

The High Table will play a major role too, so that could mean returns for Asia Kate Dillon's Adjudicator, Saïd Taghmaoui as the Elder and Anjelica Huston as the Director, one of the members of the High Table.

As for Halle Berry's Sofia, she's now repaid the marker with Wick, so she might not be back, as she's got her own hotel to run.

John Wick 4 trailer: When can we expect new footage?

We didn't get the first trailer for the third movie until January 2019, five months before the movie's release. So the earliest we can expect new footage is late 2020.

If Stahelski is right, however, you'll get a glimpse into the world of John Wick and the Continental before the trailer for John Wick 4 arrives. Hopefully that will be enough to sate fans.

Otherwise it will be a long countdown until spring 2021 when John Wick 4 hits cinemas.

John Wick 4 will be out in cinemas on 21 May, 2021.
