In a move that no one saw coming, it was recently announced that Lord of War is getting a sequel and is reteaming Cage with original writer-director Andrew Niccol (via TheWrap).
The sequel will be titled Lords of War and will see Cage reprise his role as arms dealer Yuri Orlov while Skarsgård will play Orlov's son. In the sequel, Orlov will discover he has a son who is trying to surpass him in the arms dealing marketplace.
However, his son isn't just selling weaponry, he's also building a mercenary army to fight America's Middle East conflicts. There is no word on a potential release date just yet but filming will start later this year, with Cage and Skarsgård both producing.
In a statement, Niccol said: "There is so much more to explore with these characters. Plato said it best – 'Only the dead have seen the end of war.'"
He continued: "I’m looking forward to spending more time in the company of the charming devil that is Yuri Orlov and now his illegitimate son – who turns out to not be legitimate in any way."
Meanwhile, Vendôme CEO Philippe Rousselet, who produced the original movie and will also produce the sequel, said: "The Lord of War world has no shortage of ammunition in the possibilities of stories we can tell, and we are very excited to tell yet another one that follows Yuri and Anton’s dangerous journey."
