Joker 2, aka Joker: Folie à Deux, has unveiled its twisted DC love story in its first-look trailer.

The first footage from the sequel arrived during Warner Bros's panel at CinemaCon on Tuesday (April 9), taking fans back to the surreal world of stand-up comic-turned Clown Prince of Crime Arthur Fleck.

Set to the classic song 'What the World Needs Now Is Love', Joker and Harley connect in an institution and then set off on a criminal spree.

The clip ends with Harley seemingly visiting Joker inside the institution.

"I want to see the real you," Harley tells Joker.

Harley then makes a red mark on the window screen, before Joker moves into place so the mark appears to be a sadistic grin on his face.

The film, which exists in its own continuity separate from The Batman, also features comedy legend Steve Coogan, Avatar: The Last Airbender's Ken Leung and Harry Potter's Brendan Gleeson as Gothamites unfortunate enough to cross paths with The Joker and Harley.

A previously-released poster showcases Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur Fleck/Joker holding Lady Gaga's Harleen Quinzen/Harley Quinn in a dance, dressed formally with their faces painted in clown make-up.

Interestingly, the US poster shows a cigarette in Joker's hand, but the UK version seen above has it edited out.

We've already had our first listen to Lady Gaga's Harley Quinn voice in a teaser released on Warner Bros's TikTok account. You can check that out below:

Zazie Beetz, who is reprising her role as Arthur's former neighbour Sophie Drummond in the sequel, spoke about the genre shift to a musical, stating that it "makes wonderful sense" even though it sounds weird on paper.

"I wasn't really surprised by that. Todd has always had a creative approach to the character. I love musicals, and I think of them as the characters are feeling and experiencing so much that they can only sing and dance about it, whether in sorrow or in joy," she said.

"I can actually see that within myself as well, because singing and dancing is quite a cathartic experience for me.

"I was going through a really, really difficult time at one point in my life, and I just started dancing and crying by myself. And that was an expression that matched where I was at that moment," Zazie continued.

"So I can see Arthur, who is feeling and experiencing so much, dancing and singing about it. He's the Joker, so I think it makes sense to me."

Joker: Folie á Deux is set to release in cinemas on October 4.
