Style gurus don’t come much bigger or better than Jonathan Van Ness. Whether he’s rocking a tube top in an at-home yoga video or sheer dress and statement boots on the red carpet, there’s something in his sartorial show reel for everyone.

Speaking about his evolving lewks for the January issue of Cosmopolitan UK, JVN gave a few surprising hints about the real inspiration behind his ever-more ‘femme’ ensembles. You know the ones – his iconic black and turquoise Christian Siriano gown for the Creative Arts Emmys:

So what’s behind his evolving style? Well, it turns out, even bona fide TV and Insta-stars are ruled by their bank balances, and love a pay-day splurge as much as we do.

For example, when we asked – ‘why now?’ - he replied saying, “It’s more of a checking account thing. In the early series of Queer Eye I could only afford what I could afford. Heels are kind of expensive queen!”

It’s also, he says, about the change of lifestyle that suddenly being Insta-famous bought him.

“When I was in the salon all the time, I never wore nice clothes because I was a hair colourist and didn’t want to mess up cute outfits with hair dye. Once I stopped doing hair every day, I started wearing cuter clothes and then I started making that Instagram money and then I was like ‘oh my god I can impulse buy heels and dresses!"

"I used to have to just impulse buy oatmeal raisin cookies but now I can basically splurge on fashion a bit harder," he adds. "And if I end up in my mum’s basement in a few years’ time and have to sell a load of stuff that’s also fine!”
