Joss Whedon Launches Digital Distribution of ‘In Your Eyes’ After Film’s Tribeca Screening

Joss Whedon surprised attendees at the Tribeca Film Festival’s world premiere of “In Your Eyes” when he appeared in a video announcement following the April 20 screening to announce that Whedon and Kai Cole’s Bellwether Pictures had just released the movie digitally, directly to consumers, as a $5 digital rental.

Written and exec produced by Whedon and directed by Brin Hill, “In Your Eyes” is now available on the film’s website via the Vimeo on Demand platform. Pic has been translated into Spanish, German, Portuguese, French and Japanese for the release.

Bellwether bills itself as a microstudio looking to produce indies and distribute them directly to auds via new-media tools. “In Your Eyes” was produced and released in partnership with Michael Roiff’s Day & Night Pictures.

The release strategy for “In Your Eyes” echoes similar initiatives that have seen creatives take distribution into their own hands, as Louis C.K. did when he made a tidy sum off the digital self-release of concert film “Live at the Beacon Theater” in 2011. Unorthodox release strategy for “In Your Eyes” is feasible in large part because Whedon has amassed a major following over a career that has stretched from “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” to “The Avengers.”

“In Your Eyes” stars Zoe Kazan and Michael Stahl-David in a boy-meets-girl tale infused with the supernatural. Nikki Reed, Mark Feuerstein, Jennifer Grey and Steve Howey also appear in the movie.
