Joss Whedon’s keen to direct a Star Wars spin-off
Joss Whedon has revealed he’d love to helm a ‘Star Wars’ movie providing it was a spin-off rather than one of the main stories.
Speaking to Complex, the ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ director spoke about his love for the ‘Star Wars’ franchise and how, over the years, he’s had mixed feelings on being involved.
“I mean, it’s a fun thing to do, to put yourself in the service of something if you think you can add an interpretation. It’s no different than any other storytelling. Do I want to make a ‘Star Wars’ movie? Yeah.”
While Whedon seemed up for making a slice of the galaxy far, far away…, he did have some specifications as to how exactly he’d like to do it.
“I was like, ‘I don’t want to make a ‘Star Wars’ movie. Like, god dammit, why?’ But I saw the trailer for ‘Rogue [One: A Star Wars Story]’ awhile ago and I was like, 'I want to do that.’ To make a ‘Star Wars’ movie and not be wed to the bigger picture.”
So the mixed feelings the ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ creator had over whether he’d make one of the sci-fi chapters was to do with the freedom he’d have over storytelling.
Obviously ‘Star Wars’, the main episodic movies in particular, exist in a preset and connected world. Therefore, if you’re like Whedon who wants a bit more creative freedom and input, it’s perhaps not ideal.
But with ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ proving that filmmakers can make a film in the franchise but with a spin-off there’s much more room for creativity and universe expansion.
With this in mind, there’s another two spin-offs after ‘Rogue One’ which includes the young Han Solo movie (where Donald Glover ha just been cast as Lando Calrissian) and a rumoured Boba Fett adventure, meaning Whedon could conceivably stamp his authority on the ‘Star Wars’ world at some point in the future.
