Judd Apatow Slams Golden Globes For The Martian ‘Comedy’ Row

Comedy guru Judd Apatow delivered a stern message to the studio execs who decided to run ‘The Martian’ as a “Comedy or Musical” instead of a “Drama” at this year’s Golden Globes.

Speaking at the Critics’ Choice Awards, Apatow said: “To all the dramas out there: go f*** yourselves.”

The ‘40-Year-Old Virgin’ and ‘Knocked Up’ director has every right to feel aggrieved as his own comedy ‘Trainwreck’ lost out the Golden Globes for Best Comedy or Musical to Ridley Scott’s sci-fi thriller ‘The Martian’ which is many things, but not an outright comedy.

Damon also picked up Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical at the Globes for his performance as abandoned astronaut Mark Watney and many think ‘The Martian’ tactically shifted categories in order to give it a better shot at awards glory when it risked faced big hitters like ‘The Revenant’ and ‘Room’ in the Drama group.

“I got Matt Damon staring at me right now,” said Apatow while on stage to present an award to his ‘Trainwreck’ star Amy Schumer.

“After that whole ‘Golden Globe comedy’ thing. We only have one award Matt, that’s all we get. I’m like a nerd on the schoolyard and you stole my milk money. Can we just pick whatever category we want to be in? We have an Asian man in our movie – can I go foreign film now?”

In a recent video blog BBC film critic Mark Kermode called this year’s awards categorisation “more absurd than ever”, saying ‘The Martian’ is “neither a musical nor a comedy. Yes, it has jokes in it, but it’s not really a comedy film is it?”
