It’s official – Judge Dredd is getting a TV show.

British comic book legend Judge Dredd is heading to the small screen with his very own show. Rebellion – the publishing company which prints 2000 AD – is teaming up with IM Global to produce a ‘big budget’ TV show.

And that’s great news for the fans.

After Karl Urban’s stint as the iconic Mega-City judge in Dredd, film fans have been desperate to see Judge Dredd back on the screen. In fact, a number of petitions have called for a sequel to the 2012 film… but now it seems they may be getting a lot more than that.

Rebellion said development of the project, titled Judge Dredd: Mega-City One, has begun, with the cast to be announced at a later date,” reports BBC News. “The programme will be filmed in the UK, a spokesman said.”

“We’re very excited to be beginning the journey to get more of Judge Dredd’s Mega-City One on the television screen,” said Rebellion owners Jason and Chris Kingsley. “Thanks to the legions of fans who have kept up pressure on social media, and a lot of background work and enthusiasm, we aim to make a big budget production that will satisfy both our vast comics audience and the even greater general screen-watching public.”

But will it live up to expectations?

I can’t help thinking that a TV show is the perfect format for Judge Dredd. Taking a more serial approach (much like the comic books) will allow the showrunners to tell more complex stories over an entire season… or even thrill us with one-shots starring iconic 2000 AD stars.

Just remember – he is the law.
