The Princess Diaries star Julie Andrews has offered a disappointing update on a third instalment of the films.

Released in 2001, and followed up by a beloved sequel in 2004, The Princess Diaries starred Anne Hathaway as the unsuspecting heiress to the throne of the European Kingdom of Genovia, Mia Thermopolis – and niece of Julie Andrews' Queen Clarisse Renaldi.

The sequel (A Royal Engagement) brought in Chris Pine as a love interest to great success and a third film was said to be in the works in 2022 – but now, Andrews has offered a disappointing update on the project.

Appearing on TODAY, Andrews suggested that completing the trilogy may not be the best idea.

"It’s quite a long time now since the two Diaries were done, and I’m not sure, but sometimes it’s best to leave a good thing alone," she said

Andrews added, "I don’t like it when people milk and milk and milk the subject, you know, ‘til it’s dead."

And as the nail in the coffin, the Sound of Music star suggested that the project has been "shelved" – "I think, I may be wrong, but I think it’s been shelved now – I can’t be sure," she said.

Andrews' comments are in opposition to co-stars Hathaway, Pine and Sandra Oh, – all three of whom have revealed that they'd be keen for round three.

"I wanna do it, Julie [Andrews] wants to do it, Debra Martin Chase, our producer, wants to do it," Hathway said in a 2019 episode of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen.

Pine added, "Yeah, I'm here! I'm here for it. Give me a phonecall or an email" (via ET Online).

Killing Eve's Oh also revealed that she'd like to see how her character would have developed over the years: "I am ready for the Queen. Call me!" the star said while speaking to Entertainment Weekly. "I'm dying to see how Gupta has moved up in the world".
