Kate Garraway says husband 'still very ill' amid coronavirus battle

Kate Garraway has said her husband Derek Draper is “still very ill” as he battles the coronavirus and that it is “an excruciatingly worrying time”.

The Good Morning Britain star’s husband was taken to hospital suffering from the virus last week.

She updated fans in a message read out by her co-host Ben Shephard on their ITV show on Friday.

Looking emotional, Shephard read: “Derek remains in intensive care and is still very ill.

“I’m afraid it remains an excruciatingly worrying time.

"The NHS team who have been working on him have all been extraordinary and I know it’s only their professionalism, dedication and bravery that has kept Derek with us so far.”

“I want to send a message of love and support to all of you going through this. You are not alone, we must all stand together and support each other,” the message went on.

Garraway finished her message by saying: “I am praying to be able to be talking with you soon with some positive news.

“Lots of love, Kate.”

The star was showered with support from her TV colleagues last week after it emerged that Draper had been taken into hospital for emergency care.

Piers Morgan offered up his "love and prayers", tweeting: “The GMB Now it’s been made public, I can say this horrendous situation has brought the Coronavirus crisis sharply into the hearts of all of us @GMB.

“My love & prayers to Kate & Derek.”

Susanna Reid tweeted a red heart and the words: “All my love to Kate and Derek.”

Shephard sent love to the family and said he was “sending Derek strength and positivity”.

Garraway and Draper – who are both 52 – have been married since 2005.

They have two children together - daughter Darcey, 14, and 10-year-old son Billy.
