Kate Garraway’s poignant return to ‘Good Morning Britain’ previewed in moving ITV trailer
Kate Garraway’s emotional return to ‘Good Morning Britain’ has been previewed by ITV.
The 56-year-old presenter will be back on TV on Monday (05.02.24) after her husband Derek Draper, 56, was laid to rest on Friday (02.02.24) after he lost his battle with the devastating effects of coronavirus he first contracted in March 2020.
Kate is due to give a live interview to ‘GMB’ from her home, then rejoin co-host Ben Shephard, 49, from Thursday (08.02.24) on the show.
An ITV trailer released on Sunday (04.02.24) showed a string of clips of Kate and Derek as a voiceover said: “Kate Garraway has shared the story of caring for Derek for the last four years, highlighting the struggle faced by thousands.
“Tomorrow she returns to ‘Good Morning Britain’ to talk for the first time since the death of her beloved husband. From 6am on ‘Good Morning Britain.’”
The clip was released after The Sun on Sunday reported Kate had told friends she is keen on getting stuck back into work as she copes with her grief over Derek’s death.
A source said about the mum-of-two: “Kate has had an incredibly rough past couple of months, and it has taken its toll mentally and physically.
“But she is a workhorse, and journalism, being on live TV, runs through her blood – it’s what she knows and loves.
“Kate is keen to keep busy and get stuck back into work.
“It’s the perfect time for her to be reunited with her ‘GMB’ family.
“Everyone at ‘GMB’ has been hugely supportive, and are desperate to support and welcome her back into the family.
“They’re excited to have her back after so long away.
“After caring for Derek, and her family, for almost four years, Kate needs to get back to some sort of normality. And she wants to throw herself back into work, 3.45am starts and all.”
Kate was last seen on ‘GMB’ on 8 December and it is understood ITV bosses are providing a full duty-of-care package for the presenter including counselling if it’s required.
The host is said to have racked up medical bills of more than £1 million while acting as a full-time carer for Derek.
She was seen fighting tears at his funeral the Church of St Mary the Virgin in Primrose Hill, north London – the place where the couple wed in 2005.
The couple’s children, Darcey, 17, and Billy, 14, laid flowers saying “we love you Dad”, while Darcey was one of the pallbearers.
Derek, a renowned political strategist and psychotherapist, died on 3 January, and was among the first in the UK to fall seriously ill with Covid.
He spent 13 months in hospitals, making him Britain’s longest suffering in-patient with the condition.
