Kate Winslet Told To Settle For ‘Fat Girl Roles’

BAFTA winner Kate Winslet reveals scathing advice from her drama teacher.

During this year’s BAFTA awards, the 40-year-old actress – who won Best Actress in a Supporting Role for ‘Steve Jobs’ – revealed that her former drama teacher gave her some rather cutting advice early in her career.

But thankfully, she didn’t listen…

“When I was only 14, I was told by a drama teacher that I might do OK, if I was happy to settle for the fat girl parts,” she explained backstage. “Look at me now, look at me now.”

But her teacher must have been left a bit red-faced after the young starlet landed the role of a lifetime in the 1997 box office hit, ‘Titanic’.

“So what I feel like saying in those moments is — to any young woman who has ever been put down by a teacher, by a friend, or even a parent, just don’t listen to any of it,” she added. “Because that’s what I did… I didn’t listen and I kept on going and I overcame my fears and I got over a lot of insecurity.”

Of course, this isn’t the first time Kate Winslet has won a BAFTA – landing her first back in 1996 as well as another in 2009. But she had a very important message to young actresses seeking to follow in her footsteps, telling women to “keep believing” in themselves.

“I would dedicate [the BAFTA] to all those young women who doubt themselves, because you shouldn’t be doubting — you should just be going for it.”

Kate Winslet next stars in ‘Triple 9’ – heading to cinemas on 19 February 2016.
