Soap star Kelvin Fletcher has lost 11lbs since starting training for Strictly Come Dancing, despite eating 3,000 calories a day.

The Emmerdale actor revealed he gets up at 5am so he cam hit the gym before going into a 12 hour dance rehearsal with professional partner Oti Mabuse at 10am.

Fletcher, 35, told GQ: “’ll try and get into my local gym. I’ll get up at 5-5.30 in the morning. Normally I wouldn’t be training that early, I’d be in at 7am, but you do what you have to do.

“I start dance training at 10am, which would be until 10pm. There’s a chance to get lunch where I try and get a lot of carbs. I’m on my feet all day. It’s quite tiring, so I’ve always been quite pro carbs - I think they’re a great thing. I probably eat about 2,500-3,000 calories.

“Carbs get a bad press, but they’re pretty important. I’ve stayed pretty lean, I’m about five kilos [11lbs] lighter than I was a couple of months ago. Which is fine, I think – it helps with the dancing.”

The actor stepped up to replace Made In Chelsea’s Jamie Laing on Strictly at the last minute, after the reality star injured his foot.

Fletcher revealed he does not get home until 10.30pm in the evening, but still makes an effort to eat a big meal.

He said: “It would be great to have Tupperware and keep eating while I’m dancing, but my diet is taking second priority. I’ve got to make a compromise and if that means eating at 10.30pm, so be it.”

The actor - who has a three-year-old daughter Marnie and a 10-month-old son Milo with wife of four years Liz - admitted the gruelling Strictly regime is taking over his life.

He said: “My weeks have very much changed. It’s stopped me from doing what I’d normally do in a fitness capacity and a family capacity.”
