Kevin Conroy, the prolific voice actor who has played Batman in animated series and video games since 1992, is to play Gotham City's hero for the first time on screen.

63-year-old Conroy, a huge fan favourite and for many the definitive Batman, has been cast as an ageing Bruce Wayne in US network the CW's Crisis On Infinite Earths.

Part of the Arrowverse, which also includes the shows Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow and soon Batwoman, Conroy will be a future incarnation of Gotham billionaire turned vigilante.

“Finally, on screen!” he tweeted.

There will be a number of mind-bending crossovers in the new 'television event', as its being dubbed.

Brandon Routh, who already plays Ray Palmer in Legends of Tomorrow and who played Superman in Bryan Singer's Superman Returns in 2006, will be reprising his role as Clarke Kent, and may even have some interactions with Conroy's Wayne.

More old school still is the news that Burt Ward, who played Robin in the 1960s TV series, will also be involved in some capacity.

The superhero Black Lightening will also be making his first appearance in the Arrowverse.

The Crisis On Infinite Earths shows will run over five hours of shows, with three in December and then picking up again after Christmas, taking in Supergirl, The Flash, Legends Of Tomorrow, Batwoman and Arrow.
