Kickstarter-Funded Titles Total 24 at SXSW

A year after the Kickstarter-funded “Veronica Mars” movie premiered at South by Southwest, the crowdfunding platform has been part of 24 of the 145 features in the festival this year.

Kickstarter said the projects — representing 17% of the slate — raised $1.54 million from 20,935 people. Six Kickstarter films were among the 20 in competition at SXSW, including “Creative Control,” directed by Benjamin Dickinson; “Funny Bunny,” directed by Alison Bagnall; “Krisha,” directed by Trey Edward Shults; “Manson Family Vacation,” directed by J. Davis; “Twinsters,” directed by Samantha Futerman and Ryan Miyamoto; and “Frame by Frame,” directed by Alexandria Bombach and Mo Scarpelli.

The other titles included “Bikes vs. Cars,” “KTown Cowboys,” “Deep Web,” “For the Record,” “GTFO,” “Petting Zoo,” “Rolling Papers,” “T-Rex,” “Naz & Maalik,” “Nina Forever,” “All Things Must Pass,” “Danny Says,” “Landfill Harmonic,” “They Will Have to Kill Us First,” “We Like it Like That,” “Finders Keepers,” “Ned Rifle” and “Welcome to Leith.”

A Kickstarter spokesman said that 10% of the Sundance slate was comprised of Kickstarter projects for the third consecutive year.

At $5.7 million, “Veronica Mars” holds the record for the largest amount of funding generated in a Kickstarter campaign for a movie.
