KJ Apa and Sofia Carson star in first trailer for pandemic thriller Songbird
Songbird's trailer is here to give us a first look at the pandemic thriller starring Riverdale's KJ Apa and Descendants' Sofia Carson.
In what could prove to be a very ill-judged movie (if it isn't already), Songbird is set in 2024 when the COVID-19 virus has mutated into a much deadlier strain of COVID-23 and the worldwide death toll is more than 110 million.
The entire world is into its fourth year of lockdown when Nico (Apa) – a courier who has COVID immunity – finds love with Sara (Carson), but the couple have never met as a result of the lockdown.
"It's a dystopian, scary world, but it's a romantic movie about two people who want to be together, but they can't," director Adam Mason told EW. "It's Romeo and Juliet, but they're separated by her front door and by the virus."
Produced by Michael Bay, Songbird likely isn't just about the romance though as even the brief teaser hints at the fact that the global situation has led some people to act differently to how they would before.
"Sometimes we have to do things we don't want to survive," Demi Moore's character is seen telling an unknown person, so we can expect Songbird to deliver on the usual thriller tropes for pandemic movies.
The movie also stars Bradley Whitford, Paul Walter Hauser, Craig Robinson, Peter Stormare and Alexandra Daddario, and it was filmed in July under strict safety measures in Los Angeles.
Songbird doesn't yet have a release date.
