Kong: Skull Island Casts Brie Larson, Eyes Russell Crowe

The female lead of upcoming Universal monster reboot ‘Kong: Skull Island’ has been revealed - and yes, like Fay Wray, Jessica Lange and Naomi Watts before her, she’s a blonde.

Deadline report that Brie Larson - star of ’21 Jump Street,’ ‘The Gambler’ and most recently ‘Trainwreck’ - is in talks to appear opposite Tom Hiddleston in the Legendary Pictures production, intended to “fully immerse audiences in the mysterious and dangerous home of the iconic ape as a team of explorers ventures deep inside the treacherous, primordial island.”

‘Kong: Skull Island’ hit a fairly major stumbling block recently, as two of the biggest names in the cast - Michael Keaton and JK Simmons - were forced to withdraw from the picture due to scheduling conflicts.

Reportedly, Russell Crowe is now being ‘heavily courted’ to take one of those recently vacated roles, although this is still very much up in the air.

This would seem to be quite the leap forward for Larson, who - despite having been a rising star in recent years (and quite deservedly so) - has not had a leading role in a major studio tentpole film to date.

And while ‘Kong: Skull Island’ is not expected to be yet another direct retread of the original 1933 ‘King Kong’ (like the 1976 and 2005 movies), it seems fair to assume Larson’s role won’t be too far removed from that of her aforementioned blonde forebears - so we hope she’s been practicing her screaming.

Jordan Vogt-Roberts will direct from a script by John Gatins and Max Borenstein, and the film is set to go before cameras either late this year or early in 2016, ahead of a March 2017 release which - perhaps inevitably - will include 3D IMAX.

In the meantime, let’s try not to trip up over ourselves speculating that ‘Kong: Skull Island’ is inevitably paving the way to a remake of ‘King Kong Vs Godzilla’ - even though we strongly suspect, and most definitely hope that this is on the cards…
