Kristen Stewart has teamed up with The Crown's Josh O'Connor for a new film project.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the Spencer and Happiest Season actress and God's Own Country actor will lead Rosebushpruning, along with Maleficent's Elle Fanning.

The film will be directed by Karim Aïnouz, who is currently enjoying major critical buzz from the Cannes premiere of Firebrand, starring Jude Law and Alicia Vikander. The Lobster and The Killing of a Sacred Deer writer Efthimis Filippou will pen the script.

Rosebushspruning is set to be an adaptation of the controversial 1965 Italian film Fists in the Pocket, which is about a man with epilepsy who plots to kill his dysfunctional family. It was trounced by critics but found a cult audience and was later deemed to be culturally significant.

"Marco Bellocchio’s astonishing debut, Fists in the Pocket, was released over 50 years ago and had a huge impact on Italian cinema and storytelling at the time," Aïnouz is quoted as stating. "I’m excited to be collaborating with Efthimis Filippou to revisit this iconic work to create a contemporary parable about the death of the traditional patriarchal family – which I hope will be touching and provocative in equal measure.

"It’s a dream come true to be working with such a dynamic ensemble of actors that I have long admired to bring this explosive adaptation to audiences today."

Production is set to begin in spring 2024.

Meanwhile, Cannes also saw the premiere of O'Connor's latest film, La Chimera. An Italian movie in which an English man – who might be psychic – hangs out with a load of late 19th century graverobbers. It's quite weird, but was enjoyed by reviewers.
