Lampard desperate for Chelsea star to resolve future but admits move could happen amid Man Utd interest
Frank Lampard is hoping that Chelsea can find a solution to keep Mason Mount at the club, but he has conceded that a move could happen.
The playmaker has been at a crossroads with the club for some time now. With his current deal set to expire in 2024, he has yet to come to an agreement with the club over a fresh deal.
Man Utd are being heavily linked with a move and could look to take advantage of his contract situation with Chelsea.
Other clubs such as Liverpool and Arsenal are also said to be keeping tabs on the England international.
Like plenty of other Chelsea players this season, Mount has suffered a dip in form. Despite this, he is still regarded highly at the club and Lampard himself hopes for a timely solution.
“I know he’s held in high regard at the club, and I know the club are trying to do all they can to make him stay… but in the modern day players move on,” Lampard told Sky Sports.
“It’s just a shame we’ve gotten into a situation where it looks like it’s maybe happening now.”
Ben Jacobs has reaffirmed Chelsea’s stance on the player. If he doesn’t extend his contract, they will look to cash in.
“As reported, Chelsea still hoping for a positive twist,” Jacobs explained on Twitter.
“But Mount has plenty of suitors. Chelsea will sell if no extension is agreed. Man Utd, Liverpool and Arsenal all admire Mount. The trio all feel Chelsea’s price tag, should he be sold, is £15-20m too high.”
How much is Mount worth?
There’s no doubt that Chelsea would look to sell Mount at a premium cost to one of their Premier League rivals.
Chelsea are understood to value the playmaker at around the £80m mark. However, this would surely be deemed too expensive by his potential suitors.
The 24-year-old has scored three goals this season and provided two assists. Those numbers are a far cry from the 21 goal contributions he produced last season.
Prior to Chelsea’s trip to Old Trafford, Lampard had offered further insight into the situation with Mount.
“It’s a hard one for me to comment on because I’m not inside Mason’s head and from the club’s point of view my role is clearly what it is,” Lampard told reporters.
“In the practical sense it’s completely between both sides on that front. I’m not surprised because this is football. Does everyone know that I really like Mason Mount as a lad and as a football player? Yes, sure, of course they do.
“I wish him the best personally and sitting here with my Chelsea top on now, I’ve seen what Mason has delivered at this club. But we’ll see.”
As the weeks tick on, an exit does seem to look more than likely in the summer. Although time will tell if Chelsea stick to their guns with their £80m asking price.
