Laverne Cox Says She's 'Shocked' and 'Triggered' After She and Friend Suffer Transphobic Attack

Laverne Cox is getting candid about a violent transphobic experience that she says "shocked" and "triggered" her over the weekend.

In an Instagram Live session on Saturday, the Orange Is the New Black alum told viewers that she and a friend had been out on a "socially distanced walk" together in Los Angeles' Griffith Park when they were approached by a man who "aggressively asked for the time."

"The guy who asked for the time says to my friend, 'Guy or girl?' My friend says, 'F-- off.' I'm walking — I'm hearing all this happening in a split second — and then all of a sudden, the guy is attacking my friend," said Cox, 48.

As soon as the actress "pulled out her phone to call 911," the man suddenly "was gone," so she decided against it. Cox said later in the video that she thought she maybe should've recorded the attack, but it was "so quick" she didn't get a chance to.

"I'm safe, my friend is fine," noted the star, who went on later to say she feels "lucky and grateful" that they are okay.

Cox revealed in her nearly 11-minute video detailing the incident that she has "a long history of street harassment," so sadly the attack isn't something that comes as "shocking" in the grand scheme of things.

"It's not safe in the world. I don't like to think about it a lot, but it is the truth — it's the truth, and it's not safe if you're a trans person. Obviously, I know this well," said Cox, whose friend told her that he believed she "was obviously the target."

"I've dealt with this a lot, but it never fails to be shocking," she added later. "If doesn't matter who you are. You can be Laverne Cox, whatever that means. If you're trans, you're going to experience stuff like this."

"It's important for me to remind myself and remind you that when these things happen, it's not your fault. It's not your fault that there are people who are not cool with you existing in the world," Cox told her viewers. "We have a right to walk in the park."
