Conservative candidate under fire for saying 'nuisance' council tenants should live in tents

A prospective Conservative MP has come under fire for suggesting “nuisance” council house tenants should be forced to live in tents.

In a video posted on Facebook Lee Anderson, the Tory candidate for Ashfield in Nottinghamshire, also suggested troublesome tenants should be made to pick vegetables for 12 hours a day as punishment.

The 50-second clip shows the former Labour councillor standing in a council estate he claimed contained “nuisance tenants” making life a “misery” for others.

Mr Anderson, who is hoping to take the seat from Labour in the upcoming general election, later sought to downplay his plans by describing them as “his own personal opinion, nobody else’s”.

Gloria de Piero, who stood down as an MP this month, won Ashfield by a majority of only 441 at the last election and Prime Minister Boris Johnson is targeting the seat in his bid to win a Tory majority on December 12.

Mr Anderson, who says he used to work for Ms de Piero, said in the video: “I stood on this spot a few months ago banging on about nuisance tenants throughout this lovely estate and the fact they were making people’s lives a complete misery.

“People say, ‘they have got to live somewhere’. That’s right, so my plan would be – and again, this is just my own personal opinion – that these people, who have to live somewhere, let’s have them in a tent, in the middle of a field.

“Six o’clock every morning, let’s have them up. Let’s have them in the field, picking potatoes or any other seasonal vegetables, back in the tent, cold shower, lights out, six o’clock, same again the next day. That would be my solution.”

Ian Lavery, the Labour Party chairman, shared the video and told the Tory candidate he should “hang (his) head in shame”.

Liberal Democrat MP Layla Moran accused Mr Anderson of a “lack of empathy” for constituents he hoped to represent.

“As a Conservative parliamentary candidate in a marginal seat, Anderson should not be stoking and entrenching division, or targeting vulnerable people,” she said.

“Unfortunately, this sort of comment is all too common from Conservative Party candidates, who are out of touch with the constituencies and the people they are attempting to represent.”

Mr Anderson, writing in the Daily Mail on Tuesday, said he was hounded out of the Labour Party by Momentum activists after declaring he was pro-Brexit.

The former miner predicted that Labour was “in for a major ‘coalfield kicking’ next month” and accused the party of moving away from its traditional supporters under Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership.
