Sad news for ‘Star Trek’ fans. Leonard Nimoy, who played Spock in the classic TV show and movies, is suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

The 82-year-old sci-fi legend tweeted to his followers: “I quit smoking 30 yrs ago. Not soon enough. I have COPD. Grandpa says, quit now!! LLAP”

As fans will know, LLAP means ‘Live Long And Prosper’ – the classic Vulcan salute.

Pictures of a frail-looking Nimoy sat in a wheelchair at a New York hospital emerged last month.

Despite his health problems, has still been busy in recent years, making an appearance in JJ Abrams’ rebooted ‘Star Trek’ and playing Dr. William Bell in science fiction series ‘Fringe’.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the name for a collection of lung diseases including chronic bronchitis, emphysema and chronic obstructive airways disease. The main cause is smoking, according to the NHS.

Get well soon, Leonard.
