Leonardo DiCaprio will FINALLY Get His Oscar, Sort Of

2016 could finally be Leonardo DiCaprio’s year as he looks set to win a Oscar that’s evaded him his entire career. But even if he doesn’t win the sought-after statue from the Academy, he will still get the award.. in a way.

Dedicated fans in Siberia have decided to craft a custom Oscar-inspired statue for the actor who is something of an icon there. Fans from the Siberian region of Yakutia have been donating gold and silver valuables to be melted down into a statue for the ‘The Revenant’ star.

But this ‘award’ will have a few subtle differences from the ones we see on Oscars night. For starters, this is made from silver and will clutch a ‘choron’ (a traditional three-legged Yakut goblet), instead of a gold statue holding a crusader’s sword. Also, the statue’s head will be looking upwards rather than downwards.

Tatyana Yegorova, the person spearheading the Oscar for Leo campaign, told Russian news agency TASS: “Yakutia praises high-quality cinema and considers DiCaprio to be an actor who can inspire and delight his audiences.”

It’s believed that around 100 people have donated their valuables (that’s a lot of dedicated fans!) to make the accolade and say it’s as valid as the Oscar he may or may not win. We’re not convinced Leo will be as chuffed with this if he misses out on the real deal, but you never know.

‘Since the movie is a mass art form, aimed at the broad masses, we believe that viewers have a right to give this prize,’ Yegorova said.

But how will these super fans actually get the award to their fave actor? Well, they still need to figure that part out, but we’re sure they’ll definitely do it.

Leo faces tough competition from the likes of Eddie Redmayne for his touching portrayal of a transgender woman in ‘The Danish Girl’ and Michael Fassbender for his depiction of the late Steve Jobs.

DiCaprio is, at the moment, the bookies favourite to win, but should he lose out (yet again), we’re sure he’ll be glad to pop this on his mantelpiece or in the downstairs loo.
