New Liverpool sporting director Jorg Schmadtke will reportedly start at Anfield from June 1, and he could pave the way for the signing of Micky van de Ven.

There’s been a good deal of movement in the Reds’ sporting director department in recent times. Michael Edwards left the role last year, having been in the job for the previous four years.

He was replaced by Julian Ward, who after just one season in the role, will leave at the end of the campaign.

While it’s not a suggestion he’s done a bad job, the Reds will want to appoint somebody who brings a lot to the role. Indeed, after a mediocre season by their standards, they’ll be keen on recruiting somebody who can bring in quality players.

The standout candidate was Schmadtke, currently the sporting director of Wolfsburg, a role he’s been in since 2018. It was reported not long ago that the German had “accepted” an offer from the Anfield outfit.

That would see him join on an initial short-term deal, before any decisions are made on the long-term future of the role.

Subsequent reports suggest that to be the case, with a timeline given for his appointment.

Indeed, the i reports Liverpool ‘have agreed an initial three-month deal’ with Schmadtke. They also reinforce that the current Wolfsburg employee has accepted terms.

Schmadtke to join Liverpool in June

Those terms will reportedly see him ‘start work on 1 June’. It’s also suggested the ‘nature of the agreement’ is to see how things go early on in his tenure before committing to anything longer than the three months to begin with.

While he will work alongside Jurgen Klopp in what has always been seen as the sporting director role, Schmadtke may apparently be referred to as a ‘transfer consultant’.

A lot of the Reds’ targets are already well reported. Ryan Gravenberch is one of the main names linked with a move, and it’s suggested he’s ‘ready to push through’ a transfer to the club.

There are also a lot of defenders being linked with Liverpool: Marc Guehi, Josko Gvardiol and Jurrien Timber are a few of the names on that list.

Another potential defensive snare is that of Van de Ven, from Wolfsburg. Liverpool, however, will reportedly have to battle with Arsenal and Barcelona if they’re to secure his services.

The 22-year-old has played all but one game for Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga this season, being part of a defence that’s kept 10 clean sheets, while scoring once and assisting twice.

Schmadtke could pave way for Van de Ven

Schmadtke could demonstrate his value to the Reds early, in regards to that potential signing.

The i suggests his arrival could ‘open the door’ to further recruits and Van de Ven is mentioned. They reinforce how highly sought-after the centre-back is.

If Schmadtke was to convince Wolfsburg into selling the defender to Liverpool rather than the rival sides, given his good relationship with the club, it would be a massive flex of the Reds’ muscles.

Doing so could only be good for his future prospects, as it could get him in the good books of those higher up at Anfield, in reference to a potential longer-term job.
