Spoilers! Major, huge spoilers for ‘Logan’ follow, so be warned and turned back if you’re yet to see the critically acclaimed superhero drama.

‘Logan’ director James Mangold has confirmed that he sowed the seeds for the new film’s heart-rending ending four years in his first X-Men spin-off ‘The Wolverine’.

Mangold confirmed as much on Twitter after user ‘MauriceTheChosenOne’ posted two images showing a correlation between the two movies.

“And the prize goes to Maurice!” said Mangold, quoting the tweet.

In ‘The Wolverine’, Hugh Jackman’s meets and befriends Yukio, a mutant able to see into the future. During the film she tells him: “I see you on your back, there’s blood everywhere. You’re holding your own heart in your hand.”

Shortly after this is paid off with a scene in which Logan performs surgery on himself to remove a parasite latched to his heart which is limiting his healing abilities.

Wolverine’s heart technically stops, so Yukio’s vision appears to at least be partly accurate, but it seems it’s actually a vision of the ending of ‘Logan’.

At the end, Wolverine dies protecting his clone Laura and a new generation of young mutants. He dies with the hand of Laura (who he has grown to love) in his, turning Yukio’s vision, or at least the description of it, from literal to figurative.

It’s unlikely Mangold was actively laying groundwork in ‘The Wolverine’, but it seems he was certainly referencing it during the production of ‘Logan’, and tying up a loose end in the process.

‘Logan’ is in cinemas now.
