With J R R Tolkien's enormously successful Middle-earth stories making their way into television, Amazon's Lord of the Rings project should be a target for any ambitious actor.

Now, Dominic Monaghan who previously portrayed Meriadoc Brandybuck ('Merry' to his mates) in Peter Jackson's cinematic trilogy, has cast his thoughts on a potential return as the character.

Via Metro, the actor discussed: "It just depends how they do it, really. If they do the older hobbits sitting around reminiscing on their journeys, of course I'd do that.

"I love that world and I think introducing new generations to that world only brings them back to the Peter Jackson trilogy, and to the books."

With the Eye of Sauron obliterated and Mount Doom in molten ruin, the Lord of the Rings TV series is set to be based years before the events of Jackson's adaptations. This doesn't necessarily offer opportunity for the likes of Monaghan, Elijah Wood, Sean Astin or Billy Boyd to play the four hobbits once again, but any casting announcements will certainly draw our attention.

Recently, Andy Serkis – made famous for his motion-capture performance as Gollum – addressed a possible return to his character too, stating: "Oh boy, listen, I mean... I don't think so.

"If I was anyone making those, they're obviously going to want to start fresh and create something brand-new. And that's how it should be. That's what you do with great, classic pieces of work."
