The only copy of a Three Stooges film which was thought to have been lost in a fire the 60s has turned up on the other side of the world. In a shed.

Avid film collector Malcolm Smith, 78, who lives in the Sydney suburb of Manly, discovered the copy of 'Hello, Pop!' when clearing out his collection of vintage films.

“I've been disposing of my film library because I don't know how much longer I'll be around,” he said.

“When I came across that one I thought, no, I'll put that aside. I suspected it could be a lost film.”

He had bought the film from another collector in the 1950s, unaware that it was believed lost after a fire at the MGM vault in 1967.

Smith, who does not have a computer, asked a friend to look into his finding, only to discover the rarity of the reel, a 35mm Technicolor nitrate print.

The 18-minute film, made in 1933, has now been restored by MGM, and is set to be screened again in New York at the weekend.

A collector of films for six decades, Smith bought the film from another collector, who had saved it from being destroyed following its run at cinemas.

Film historian Paul Brennan told the Sydney Morning Herald: “Across America, there are probably five million hardcore Three Stooges fans.

“On NitrateVille or any of the websites that search for lost vintage material, there is euphoria that the sole missing Three Stooges film has been found.”

Smith's collection has saved the day before too, with his copy of another MGM film, 'Hollywood Party', being used to restore sound to the original print in 2008.
