While Avengers: Infinity War has been smashing box-office records, it still has a ways to go before it can match Marvel’s previous 2018 release, Black Panther, whose $689 million U.S. tally is currently the third-highest total ever. Audiences simply can’t get enough of T’Challa’s (Chadwick Boseman) first standalone venture, and for those interested in making a return trip to Wakanda, we now have an exclusive deleted scene from the film.
Titled “Voices From the Past,” the above clip was originally slated to appear after Black Panther‘s opening flashback scene. It serves to establish the young T’Challa’s loving relationship with his dad, King T’Chaka (Atandwa Kani), as well as the ruler’s feelings of sorrow over what he has done to his brother in the preceding scene — not to mention, the clip sets up the fact that T’Challa and Nakia (played as an adult by Lupita Nyong’o) are familiar with Wakanda’s catacombs, something that comes in handy later in film. All told, it’s a short but sweet scene from the hero’s past, and further underscores the father-son bonds that give the Marvel blockbuster its emotional heft.
“Voices From the Past” is one of four deleted scenes that’ll be included on the upcoming Black Panther Blu-ray, which will also feature a director’s commentary, four behind-the-scenes featurettes, a gag reel, a sneak peek at July’s Ant-Man and the Wasp, and a look at the first 10 years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film is available for digital download on May 8 and arrives on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD on May 15.
