'Lucifer season 5b': The end is in sight again as the latest season of Lucifer hits Netflix

Tom Ellis-fronted series Lucifer is, ironically, the Lazarus of TV shows: when you think it’s finally been killed off, it’s come back fighting.

Season five, part two, now streaming on Netflix, is comprised of eight episodes initially intended to end the series.

But then, in an unprecedented move, Netflix seemingly went ‘to Hell with it’ and greenlit a season six for good measure, weeks before filming ended.

This is the third time this has happened on Lucifer.

So it should come as no surprise that the new instalments have an air of finality to them.

Picking up where part one left off, Lucifer (Tom Ellis), twin brother Michael (also Ellis), and Amenadiel (DB Woodside) are confronted with the arrival of their father, God.

Dennis Haysbert joins the cast in the role, playing the deliberately elusive character who refuses to give a straight answer to anything.

After years of teasing what the Lord Almighty himself would be like, it turns out that he’s pretty much your average sitcom dad — complete with a barbecue apron.

He even has a penchant for musical numbers, something that becomes apparent during the events of the long-awaited song-and-dance episode, 'Bloody Celestial Karaoke Jam'.

Turns out, God may be all-knowing, but he’s not all understanding, especially when it comes to his children.

But God isn’t just there for a holiday, he’s retiring from his position, and now it’s up to the angels to decide who will be taking his place.

Cue the ever-at-war Lucifer and Michael going head-to-head for the job, by any means necessary.

While this celestial battle commences, the rest of the team around the LAPD continue as normal, solving cases and having continued existential crises as they grapple with their own idea of faith.

For Chloe Decker (Lauren German), this means figuring out exactly where she stands with Lucifer, with their on/off relationship finally making ground right before the God of all decisions is thrust upon them.

Meanwhile, Ella Lopez (Aimee Garcia), one of two remaining lead characters unaware of her pals’ real identity, is losing her ever-positive and faithful sheen in the aftermath of discovering her boyfriend was a serial killer.

Then there’s Detective Dan Espinoza (Kevin Alejandro), who is still digesting the information that Lucifer is, in fact, the Devil, when he comes face-to-face with actual God.

As the series progresses, it’s clear that everyone has Lucifer's ending in sight, and as a result, writers Joe Henderson and Ildy Modrovich have ensured fan service is ramped up to full capacity.

Old favourites make their return, long-promised love stories start coming full circle, and shock twists lead up to a smackdown final episode… that had to be tweaked so it’s not the final episode anymore.

The results can be somewhat jarring, with the team at points seemingly scrambling to add in a few teases about what’s to come in the upcoming final sixth season (which they promise is actually the last one this time).

But with the ultimate showdown between brothers Michael and Lucifer — and the often talked about, but rarely seen, angel siblings finally making an appearance — it’s safe to say the end game is officially, finally, in sight.

Lucifans - get ready to go out all guns blazing.
