More often than not, some of our favorite buys are small, how-didn’t-I-know-about-this products that solve an everyday problem. That’s what we’re highlighting in our Little Lifesavers series: cheap, simple purchases that you’ll use on the daily. Hit “Add to Cart” and thank us later!

Problem: I can be a little persnickety about lighting — a bedside lamp is just too bright for nighttime reading.

Solution: The LuminoLite Rechargeable Book Light provides three levels of illumination for any type of wind-down activity.

Prior to owning this book light, I truly lived in the dark ages: The only small clip-on lights that I'd ever used were battery-operated, powered by a watch battery that always seemed to die within the first week of use. The makers of these clunky old book lights didn't seem to intuit that readers might actually fall asleep while using the product and drain the battery.

Frustrated, I gave up on book lights for a while. Because, after all, doesn't a nightstand lamp offer more than enough illumination for bedtime reading? Well, it does — much to the chagrin of the person next to you in bed who's trying to sleep.

Thankfully, the issue was put to rest when I was gifted the LuminoLite Book Light as a stocking stuffer a few years ago. I still can't get over how genius it is. I use it every single night, whether I'm reading or not, and it's the most reliable gadget I own.

The lightweight, under-$20 LuminoLite Book Light is such a simple device, it barely seems noteworthy. It’s a rechargeable LED light with three brightness levels and an infinitely flexible neck that clips onto anything up to 1 inch thick. It charges via micro-USB port and lights up to indicate its progress: red means it’s charging, blue means it’s ready for reading!

What I love about this gadget, which sets it apart from every electronic object that I own, is its considerable battery life. The manufacturer claims that it has a 60-hour run time, and while I haven't strictly tested this, I do believe it. With nightly use for an hour or two (and the occasional overnight run after I've long passed out), I scarcely charge it more than once a month. Unfortunately, it doesn't offer any indication of its current battery level, which may be its one and only design flaw.

The LuminoLite Book Light is also the ideal travel accessory, even if I’m not doing much of that these days. I’ve used it on various forms of transit to avoid being the type of seat partner who passive-aggressively switches on the overhead light at the worst time. Plus, this bendy light is pretty charming — it has a way of making even the most cramped travel compartment feel a little cozier.

Its LEDs' three brightness levels can be toggled via its sole button, ranging from 3,000K to 4,200K to 6,500K color temperature and getting progressively more blue in tone as it brightens. I usually use it on the lowest setting. The brightest color temperature setting is a little too effective.

If you do go in for the purchase, my one pro tip is to not attach this book light to a book! That obtrusive bump that it creates underneath the pages, as much as I try to ignore it, is always disruptive to the reading experience. You can attach this light to any secure thing within a head swivel's distance from you: the corner of a headboard, the collar of a shirt or coat, a seat-back tray, or the pole of a floor lamp.

I even use this light in conjunction with my Kindle Paperwhite. No need for one bookish device to outshine the other. The LuminoLite Book Light bridges the very specific gap between evening and bedtime ambiance, when I want to close out the day in the glow of a good read.
